...and who would you vote for?

There is a Scenario at the start of Kwame Kwei Armah's play 'Statement of Regret' where one of the characters asks his business partner "if Hilary Clinton was running for US president against Condoleeza Rice, who would you vote for?" (I guess the UK equivalent would be Cherie Blair vs a black Female Tory - someone like the former mayor of Wandsworth, the fiery Lola Ayorinde).

The dilemma is supposed to represent the classic conscience versus own culture or race. I suppose it also assumes the respondent is ideologically left-wing. The question is particularly topical at this time where Obama is running for politcal office and millions of African Americans are being asked to support the charismatic Barack whether or not his policies appeal to them.

In Chris Rock's recent UK stand up tour he had a particularly relevant routine where he says the majority of the Italian Americans are voting for Rudy Giuliani and all the Jews are voting for Liebermann and he ain't even running! He goes on to complain that a notable amount of African Americans are choosing to vote for Hilary because she 'understands black people' and can she understand black people more than Obama? he exclaims.

In the mid Nineties I rejoiced when I heard OJ got off. Not because I thought he was innocent or because I didn't sympathize with Nicole's family, but because the case trancended OJ's guilt or innocence, representing more the inequalities of the American legal system as it applied to the different races.

So faced with Kwame's dilemma who would you vote for Condi or Clinton?

It's time for a change and while I Condi is a black woman, for the past 8yrs she has stood beside and supported the current administration. I don't think it's possible to live a lie for 8 years. At some point your true self has to show.

So saying that I'd vote for Hillary simply b/c her platform aligns most closely with my own and Condi's doesn't.

But in this current race.... I'm OBAMA all the way!

lol. this is a tough one. like u said a lot of Black pple are being asked to vote Obama even tho they dont understand wat he stands just so a black man can move into the white house. I had this arguement with my mum some weeks ago whre i opted for Obama she opted 4 Hilary. Her point was who else to do a better job than a woman? At this point i let her win coz she is all for strong independence and all that.

on another note, did u go 4 chris rock's stand up? Is it out on dvd? Where can one see it abeg...i love that man.

See that is the point. I am sure that most black people, especially democrats that are black, would not support Condi because she black, just like they wouldn't support Alan Keyes or Clarence Thomas. Heck, most wouldnt support Al Sharpton if he ran and they did come out in numbers for Jesse Jackson as they did for Obama. For many black people, race is the icing on the cake when they support Barack. They are in step with his positions, love the way he has run the campaign, are looking for a genuine anti-war candidate. And for Africans, many have not forgotten how the Clintons ignored us during the Rwandan genocide. This argument that black people support Obama ONLY because he is black is incredible. I think this argument got voiced more after the Mississippi primary. But notice that Clinton got 3/4s of the white vote there. Does this mean that white people only support Clinton because she is white. No! I think it is just a tesatement to the fact that Mississippi is deeply divided along racial lines. In other states, save for a couple, this has not been the case.
